Land Day

30th  March

 Background Info

Every March 30th, the Palestinians mark "Land Day" a commemoration of the Israeli Zionist army's 1976 killing of six Arab Palestinians during protests over land confiscation.

Israel's then Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin had ordered the land confiscation as part of a government plan with the stated goal of "developing the northern region of Galilee".

Rabin said that agricultural lands in arid (Israel) should be exploited as much as possible and landowners appropriately compensated. But the Israeli Zionist government was also looking to boost the Jewish presence in Galilee, a mostly Arab part of the country.

Responding to a call from the Rakah communist party, Arab Palestinians community in Palestine (Israel) launched a major protest against the confiscations, blocking traffic on a number of highways. Security forces fired live rounds at the demonstrators, killing six of them.

Land Day has since become an annual day of protest for Arab Palestinian community in Palestine (Israel), which at more than a million people makes up 18 percent of (Israel)'s population.

Arab Palestinians, in (Israel), are the descendants of the Palestinians who stayed in their homes when the Jewish Zionist state was created in 1948 usurping the land of Palestine.

The Arab Palestinian minority, in (Israel), suffers from discrimination, as recognized in July by the Israeli Supreme Court, particularly in the housing sector.
